Silent Radio's debut retrospective on the new MEGAWAVE label is a classic example of Ann Arbor's eclectic blend of rock, reggae, and roots. Evolving from a jam band assembled in the late 1970's, Silent Radio® first formed in 1982, played in the Ann Arbor and Detroit areas, and achieved its present form in 1984.
The band members' different musical influences are reflected in the unique styles of their original songs. Greg Kjolhede and Gail Baker are the two primary singer/songwriters. Greg Kjolhede is the conceptual architect and a lead vocalist of the band, also playing guitar and E-Bow. Greg's original music is a synthesis of the music he has been producing since early childhood, with a folk trio in the mid-1980's and a country-reggae group in the mid-1990's along the way. In recent years, Greg has also become involved in theater, everything from Shakespearean to dinner theater, which prepares him as a striking presence on stage. Gail Baker is a lead vocalist and plays guitar as well. She has won awards for her songwriting, having accumulated a discography of eight releases. She moved on to critical acclaim as a vocalist with styles ranging from jazz to rock to new wave. Gail has been trained as a recording engineer and producer and co-produced the Silent Radio® release.
Christopher "Kip" Godwin plays lead and rhythm guitars, both acoustic and electric. Kip has performed extensively with popular regional and local bands, receiving wide acclaim for his guitar work. In addition to the Silent Radio® project, he has participated in many studio projects, being considered a versatile, intelligent guitarist among his peers, and he has also been classically-trained as a percussionist. Ray Bailey plays bass and sings backup vocals, previously performing with many other Michigan bands. He also performs and records with three other local groups, Nuthin' Fancy, Fancy That, and Most Wanted, also on the MEGAWAVE label. Scott Williams plays drums and sings vocals. He is a classically-trained percussionist who has performed with noted symphony orchestras throughout Indiana and Michigan, but has a passion for rock'n'roll. Scott's enthusiasm for drumming has brought him to the front as a much-called-upon sideman for Detroit artists.
Having moved on to solo projects in 1988, Silent Radio® re-formed in 1994 for this studio project, Silent Radio® a 15-song retrospective. Since this project was released, Silent Radio® has continued to perform in various forms. For booking, please contact Silent Radio® at 213-843-4216.
